Melbourne has a good suburban
rail network radiating
out from the centre of
the city. The terminus
is Flinders Street Station,
but most services perform
a circuit round the underground
city loop, often operating
in one direction in the
morning and in the opposite
direction in the evening.
Long-distance trains
use Southern Cross Station ( formerly Spencer Street) as
their terminus. Although
routes and services have
been curtailed in recent
years, the state is still
reasonably well served
by the V-Line services.
Routes are operated by
rail or by road, or by
a combination of both.
Amongst the destinations
served by V-Line or others
by rail are Geelong,
Warrnambool, Ballarat,
Bendigo, Swan Hill, Echuca,
Shepparton, Albury and
Sale. Amongst the destinations
served by road are Apollo
Bay, Mt. Gambier, Adelaide,
Mildura, Griffith, Beechworth,
Bright, Mansfield, Canberra,
Phillip Island, Lakes
Entrance and Bateman's
Bay.
The New South Wales
rail company, Countrylink,
runs trains between Melbourne
and Sydney, with road
connexions to Canberra.
Great Southern Railway
operates trains between
Melbourne and Adelaide,
with connexions to Perth,
Alice Springs and Melbourne.
