There is one day of the year, where Melbourne has its very own public holiday. The city shuts down, bars are packed, restaurants booked out, and everyone streams through the city dressed to the nines in hats, colourful dresses and dapper suits. And what for? To watch a horse race. The Melbourne Cup is perhaps the most popular day in Melbourne’s calendar year. A party atmosphere that is truly unmatched by any other Australian Sporting event which is paired with perhaps Australia’s most important event on the fashion calendar.
The Melbourne cup is not just one day; it is comprised of four unique race days – which all come with their own unique dress code.
First is the AAMI Victoria Derby day which is closely followed by the Melbourne Cup, which is always held on the first Tuesday in November and is a public holiday for the city. The following day the Crown Oaks day is held and then on the next Saturday the Emirates Stakes Day wraps up the party with the final races.
